About this site
Greetings! If you're here, you've probably seen my comics somewhere. I've been a freelance cartoonist for most of my adult life, published in places like The Nation, Politico, In These Times, Daily Kos, The Nib (RIP), and alternative newsweeklies around the US. I've done commissioned work for the ACLU, NPR, and Kaiser Health News. For what it's worth, I've managed to receive some fancy awards along the way such as the Berryman from the National Press Foundation, the Herblock Prize, and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. I was also a Pulitzer Finalist once.
Like many writers and artists in today's broken media environment, I rely on subscribers to keep my work sustainable. I've maintained a Mailchimp email list and a Patreon for several years now. Since many readers seem interested in newsletters these days, I'm creating a new way to receive my comics and writing. This publication is an alternative to Substack, which for various reasons I prefer not to subsidize. In this age of rampant disinformation and authoritarian-enabling ideology, I'm a great believer in the axiom that the medium is the message. Where you publish (and who profits from it) is as important as what you publish. I'm afraid the only way forward is to create new media grounded in the values of sound journalistic standards serving the public interest.
Why Dystopia Patrol? Well, every newsletter needs a catchy name. And you may have noticed that things aren't going too well lately.
In particular, I'm interested in how we got to this terrible place: the manipulation of ideas and language, malevolent uses of technology, extreme economic inequality, consumer abuses, climate denialism, and draconian attacks on the right to protest. We're going to have a grim, knowing laugh at it all, and try to keep the flame alive.
So please, if you're able, consider subscribing and we'll try to keep it real together.
